Rahul Gandhi has been a name who has been the subject of several stories in the news and media in recent times. The man has been one of the most electric figures in the parliament these days.

He raised a storm early on in the budget session when he blamed the PM of being a one-man government and doing things the way he pleases, he further alleged Modi to be running ‘fair and lovely’ schemes of converting Black money into White.

Following that, RaGa was indirectly targeted during Narendra Modi’s speech the next day. Gandhi then made the news over his comments on the EPF, on Mallya and on the rain-hit farmers.

Even in an adverse parliament setting, Rahul Gandhi has been a vocal force, and he has of late been in fresher controversies due to his citizenship.

The opposition has been leading man charges against him, and many leaders, being led by Subramanian Swamy have alleged Rahul Gandhi of conducting a business deal in the UK and disclosing himself as a British National.

The Ethics Committee has been the body which has been leading this charge on behalf of the ruling party. The Ethics Committee is led by senior parliamentarian, LK Advani.

“Rahul Gandhi has been issued notice seeking his response on why he declared himself as British citizen. The complaint was received by the Speaker and she has forwaded the complaint to the Ethics Committee,” said Arjun Ram Meghwal, an Ethics Committee member and BJP MP.

The issue was referred to the Ethics Committee by speaker Sumitra Mahajan. Swamy first alleged this in November 2015, in a letter which he wrote to the Prime Minister.

“As you can see from the company annual return that Rahul Gandhi has given his date of birth correctly but has declared himself to be of British nationality with a United Kingdom address,” the letter said.

However, the SC in November 2015 had dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking a CBI probe into Gandhi’s citizenship based on the same evidence. “How do we know whether these documents are authentic? Can we start making roving inquiries now?” the bench had told.

Swamy, in the past has filed various such cases and claims against the members of the Congress party and especially the Gandhi family. Nearly all of them, however, have been fruitless.
